Deep water culture hydroponics has really been coming on strong as a popular way to grow hydroponically. Not only is it popular with newcomers to growing but the veterans have warmed up to this type of system as well. It can be a great entry way into hydroponic gardening because it is relatively easy to set up, easy to maintain, and your results have the potential to be phenomenal. These systems are typically less expensive than some of the other hydroponic systems on the market today.
Deep water culture hydroponics works by suspending your plant roots into a nutrient solution that is heavily oxygenated with air stones. If you simply tried to hang your plant into a nutrient solution without providing oxygen to the roots, the root system would decay and die. These roots desperately need a high level of oxygen in order to properly process the nutrients and water they intake.
Many people prefer to build their own deep water culture hydro systems, while others prefer to purchase them. I have gone both routes and for me, my time is worth the extra few bucks it takes to purchase a premade system. When all is said and done, you will probably end up spending 2/3 of the $$ building it yourself, but how many hours and trial and error will you go through before you really get where you want to be? To me, the extra few bucks are worth getting something you know you can depend on and that is ready to start growing right when you get it!
